NOTHING WAS GAINED AND NOTHING WAS LOST

“Thank you again for applying,” echoed around the diner, “but upon further review of other applicants,” and then the voices trailed off and suddenly picked up again, “we encourage you to apply again in the future!” Everyone now knew those words by heart and would repeat them sitting there together. If anywhere or anything, that diner held us in cooperation. And when we reached the word “future,” a depleting, callous laughter rallied us whole. It was obvious to anyone local, we had become like so many others, out there. A people not yet defeated, but who had persisted through loss of almost everything and continued to lose when chance involved hope. Celebrate and share our sorrow, it seemed, was all we could do now to survive. Time would grow and grow. And these past 5 years, which were our years, remained terrible.

An extraordinary thing occurred as the economy and the nation at large held fast to its Captains’ Obstinate, Mad course. The summer homeowners began to shutter up their second or third property windows, which wasn’t so amazing. But those who did come following the Great Shuttering, arrived less and less frequently and began to engage the locals only when they had to.

Sitting in that diner, which was once busy from dawn until well into the night with families or married couples from parts beyond, and who weren’t above letting you know that they in fact made a great deal of money, and who once tried mightily as they could to be local for their short time there on the island, began to seclude themselves at corner tables in the diner. Buried deep there, maybe they had thought and discussed amongst themselves while still in their cars before entering, “we’ll stop by to eat and help out the diner, but we shouldn’t speak to anyone because we’re doing well and we haven’t seen anyone else from the city since we’ve been here. And we simply don’t know these people well enough, but we should certainly eat now or otherwise we’ll be hungry for miles.”

So the brave souls from the city kept to themselves. Which was quite extraordinary to those of us from the island who had so often conversed with them with such great ease. Our plight had become too unbearable for them to accept. Which wasn’t so unusual when considering everywhere else in the nation. The thing, before their absence all together, which was most extraordinary to us beyond their sudden lack of courtesy, amiable conversation and ability to look us locals in the eyes, was the fact that they stopped tipping their waiters.

And then, they were gone.

We, life persisted, as just another chronological circumstance with our own multiplying and arbitrary challenges. The local conversation was dependable. If it was raining, we talked about the rain. If it was cold outside, we told each other to bundle up as the bell rang above the door when someone exited. And if it was hot outside, we asked each other whether or not we thought relief was in sight? The weather, which no one can predict, much like our lives, afforded us something uncertain, which we could all depend on.

Creative Writing Piece, A Clown Walks into a Bar-

  1. Interior of a Bar- Morning

The door pushes open exposing a dimly lit, depressingly silent bar. Several men sit around the bar looking down at their drinks and the ashtrays in front of them as though they’re contemplating their wasted lives and how much longer they have until they’re finally put out of their misery. The bar is shaped like a horse track. The door opens and the camera focuses on big red shoes walking. The shoes pass and a figure of a man dressed in a peculiar outfit comes into view. He sits down at the bar on the opposite side of the room from the door. There is a seat between him and another man who looks at the new patron as though he were annoyed. The new patron is in a clown outfit with a little makeup still behind the ears.

MAN AT BAR

“What the fuck are you supposed to be?”

CLOWN

“A clown.”

MAN AT BAR

“Yeah you look it. You go to school for that?”

CLOWN

“I did.”

MAN AT BAR

“Your parents must be proud.”

CLOWN

“It’s been a long time.”

“It’s been a long time since what?”

CLOWN

“It’s been a long time since I’ve spoken with them.”

A speech celebrating Don O’Bannon’s time as Board Chair of the Airport Minority Advisory Council

During his time as National Chairman, AMAC has made tremendous strides. Under his selfless guidance, Don worked tirelessly to educate airport commissioners, directors and legislators on how diversity in airport employment and contracting enables entire communities to benefit. As a result, the membership base grew significantly. His commitment to building lasting relationships proved instrumental in organizing the testimony of AMAC members on Capitol Hill.
